Roku Media Player - Still A Cordcutters Dream For Streaming Media

Roku Media Player App
Roku Media Player App

By now most of us have joined Netflix and a few other streaming channels like Amazon and Hulu to see what entertainment value they offer in this cordcutting environment.  What we were quick to learn is not every oldie but goodie can be found in these extensive movie catalogs.  All of which are subscription based.  But as our DVD players continue to collect dust we wanted to remind everyone of a well known plug and play application that is just as cool as any of the existing channels on your Roku player.  And that is the Roku Media Player.

The Roku Media Player is an application that comes pre-installed on your Roku player and allows you to watch most movie files from just about any external hard drive via USB.  Whether you are connecting a 4TB hard drive with its own power source or a Windows or Macintosh computer, the connection will be the same.  You will use your Roku’s USB port to watch movies, view photos and slide shows of your camera, and listen to music from any portable device or auxiliary outlet.

Roku Media Player Supported Files
Roku Media Player Supported Files
The following media file formats are supported:
  • Video — H.264/AVC (.MKV, .MP4, .MOV), on Roku 4 only: H.265/HEVC (.MKV, .MP4, .MOV); VP9 (.MKV)
  • Audio – AAC (.MKV, .MP4, .MOV); MP3(.MP3, .MKV); WMA (.ASF, .WMA, .MKV), FLAC (.FLAC, .MKV), PCM (.WAV, .MKV, .MP4, .MOV), AC3/EAC3 (.MKV,.MP4. .MOV, .AC3), DTS (.MKV, .MP4, .MOV), ALAC (.MKV, .MP4, .MOV, .M4A)
  • Image — JPG, PNG, GIF (non-animated)
The following USB drive formats are supported:
  • FAT16, FAT32, NTFS and HFS+
USB flash drives and externally powered USB hard drives work best with the Roku player. Some USB powered hard drives will not be able to draw enough power from the Roku player to function properly, especially if used with another drive on a USB hub.  The Roku Media Player also lets you access different partitions on a USB drive.

Roku Hotel And Dorm Streaming

Roku-Adult-2

Home screen of Roku Player

We’ve been streaming our favorite Roku channels in hotel rooms for over a year now.  But we always had to use a mobile WiFi hotspot whenever establishing a networking connection.  This is great if we had 3G or 4G connectivity but sometimes it was difficult streaming our programs when the signal strength failed to exceed two bars.  That all changed a few months ago when Roku added a new feature in the network settings of Roku devices, called hotel and dorms connect.

Hotel and dorm streaming does require password authentication from room occupants, usually last name and room number, before you can join the private network of whatever property you are staying.  Our team was able to survey this cool feature at a number of different hotel properties in the United States and Europe.  We were at mercy to the hotels WiFi speeds on all occasions but got pretty good results with the hotel and dorm streaming feature overall.  The setup process is as follows:

1. Insert your Roku Player into one of the HDMI ports behind or on the side of the TV in your hotel or dorm.  This could be a little tricky depending on the make and model of the TV.  Plus, some hotels may mount their TV on the wall making it impossible to use any of the media I/Os on the rear.  Below we use a Roku Stick shown inserted into the rear and side HDMI ports of an HDTV at several hotels.  You can also download this tutorial for future reference.

HDMI ports are generally on the side or back of HDTVs. A Roku Stick in various hotel TVs.

2. To get to the home screen of your Roku Player you are going to manually press the “Input” button on the side or bottom of your TV so that the onscreen menu populates.  Once the menu appears press again to arrive at the corresponding HDMI port you are using.  The usual display is HDMI1, HDMI2 and so on.  Newer HDTV’s and Ultra HD / 4K models have four or five port.

5. Click on the network name and it will begin making a connection to your Roku Player.  The player can be a Roku Stick as shown here, but also a Roku 4 / 4K, Roku 3, Roku 2, or Roku RT.

7. On the next screen you will use your smartphone, tablet or computer to enter the required information.  The wireless network will show your Roku Player similar to #2 in the screen shot below.  It will cancel out if not entered in a timely manner.  A good practice is to connect your mobile device or computer first so you will already be logged on to the network for hotel and dorm streaming.

8. Once you're connected to the network your Roku Player will populate.  Click on it to complete the setup by entering the password from step #7 on your screen.

Some hotels and dorms have sophisticated entertainment software.  Switching around or unplugging a few cables may be all it takes to get your Roku Player up and running.  When at a hotel you should remember that you are a guest and the hotel guest managers are usually willing to do whatever to keep you happy.  On one of our setups at a hotel in Prague we called the front desk and asked for the engineer to assist us with a television issue.  After explain to the engineer what we were trying to do, he obliged.  He left for a few moments the returned with a special remote and programmed a designated channel just for viewing our Roku Player for the remainder of our stay.  And all we had to do was ask.  Be sure to tip the guy or gal since this not something they are required to do.

Let us know if these directions work for you while you're on the road and wish to access your media on the go.  Cheers!

2016 Complete List of Roku Adult Channels [VIDEO]

As the list of roku adult channels continue to grow so does the quality of the content being streamed on the various Roku devices.  Just as Roku released Roku 4 / 4K there were about four television manufactures who had a 4K / Ultra HD model available for about $500 USD.  Then about two weeks ago Roku announced that their app would be shipping pre-installed in some LG models.

Life's good!  Not just for LG and other tech companies who see the TV bubble will continue to force networks to jump into the streaming market.  Life's also good for cordcutters who now have more option than ever on their Roku player.  About two years ago there were only twenty-eight (28) Roku Adult Channels / Roku Porn Channels available whenever referencing private channels.  Today, that number has grown to just about forty (40) or so, with some adult entertainment companies doubling down to add a second or third channel to keep their customers happy.

The amount of porn or sex being streamed on Roku does not compare to the amount of hours cordcutters are streaming Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and other popular apps but it is affordable enough that some will give it a try on a trail bases.  And they are quickly reminded of just how damn good porn looks on a 60" screen in high definition.

As with any community we monitor what is trending on Roku, then categorize and reference anything news worthy for adults.  And so we continue to maintain the most complete list of Roku adult channels that is updated quarterly.  Although prices may change after the list is published it is advisable to reach out to the channel owners directly for clarity.  Some channels actively forward changes and updates to our inbox and we will tweak those changes here before the next update if its something pertinent to their operation.

Roku 4 Setup Tutorial For 4K / Ultra HD TV

In this tutorial we’re going to walk through the Roku 4 setup.  You should have already unboxed your Roku 4 and made your HDMI and power cord connections.  Then after a few moments at the home screen you’ll be asked to select the wireless router associated with your network before being prompted to enter the password for your network.

As per usual, you will use the purple arrow button on your remote to toggle up, down, left or right to enter your password and the OK button to confirm your actions during the Roku 4 setup.
After clicking OK to connect, your Roku 4 will begin connecting to your wireless network, local network and the internet.

Your device will automatically perform a software update.  Upon completion it will restart.  Next, Roku 4 will have you set your display type.  You can press OK to auto detect this.  You can also do it manually where 720p, 1080p, and 4K Ultra HD are supported.

And finally, you will prompted to activate your Roku by going to Roku.com/link where you will enter the code that appears on screen.  And once the coded is entered, click the submit button.
You will notice your TV and Roku 4 quickly responds after submitting the code.  This means your Roku 4 has been activated and is now updating existing channels and importing any new channels you may have added.

All Done!  Your Roku 4 Setup is complete.  Stay tuned for more tips and guides for Roku 4 and 4K Ultra HD TV.

Roku Adult Channels prepare to deliver 4K Ultra HD for Roku 4

Roku has finally drew the curtains on the highly anticipated Roku 4.  Confirming all rumors that the new streaming device will support 4K Ultra HD video.  Though slightly bigger than its predecessors, the $129.99 sticker price is pretty reasonable given its faster processor and features that places it in a class by itself.  We should start to see them on store shelves everywhere after October 21st.

Adult Roku Channel providers and adult entertainment companies alike usually waste no time getting out in front on new technologies.  With Roku 4 and its ability to streaming 4K videos at 2160p, will be no different.  Many channels already offer Roku porn in high definition content in some form or another.  While others offering exclusive HD porn videos will likely be among the first to deliver 4K Ultra HD.

With Roku's 7 million active monthly owners who have already streamed 2.5 billion hours in the first six months of 2015, we can certainly expect to see these numbers curve sharply going into 2016 with Roku 4 making huge impact.  Not to mention Vizio and LG are already offering 4K Ultra HD TV's in the price range of $550.00.

Still holding out for a Roku 4?

The best set-top box so far is Roku 3. But the Roku Stick might be the closes we will get to seeing a Roku 4 for a while now that more TVs are Roku Ready. Roku has moved to brokering more deals with television manufactures who are receptive to shipping TVs with the Roku software already installed. With over 10 million players sold they can now begin accounting for smart TVs that are Roku Ready as unit sold. If the demand for 4K TV and Ultra HD TVs increases there may be a need for a Roku 4 capable for streaming higher resolution content. Many of us never even purchased a BluRay player.

So whatever Research & Development Roku has put into 4K streaming it has to be a device capable of pushing out 1/2 TB and would be shelved if 4K does not take off. It will also require consumers to increase their broadband speeds to handle the signal in some cases. Additionally, because of the new 4K and Ultra HD TVs being made available this Holiday we are enjoying 32" to 42" HDTVs for a little more that $200.00.  That's low enough to put one in every room in your house if you could convince yourself to watch that much TV for the next ten years. You would probably pay to see the next Avatar installment in 4K - but that's about it.
